PDP Governors ‘Alarmed’ At Rivers State Crisis, Welcome President Tinubu’s Intervention

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Governors’ Forum has welcomed the intervention of President Bola Tinubu to end the political crisis in Rivers State.

The governors of the opposition PDP stated this in a communique released after their meeting at the Oyo State Governor’s Lodge in Abuja on Tuesday.

According to the communique signed by the Chairman of the Forum and Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, the governors said they “were alarmed at the recent developments in Rivers State and welcome the intervention of Mr. President to bring the crises to an end”.

The PDP governors “urged all parties to the Rivers State crises to sheath their sword and resort to peaceful means of resolution”.

The PDP Governors’ Forum offered “its platform for a quick and just containment of the issues involved”.

Earlier, SaharaReporters reported that President Tinubu had intervened to resolve the crisis in the state involving Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his predecessor, Nyesom Wike.

Wike is currently the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory.

Tinubu spoke to Wike and Fubara to “douse tensions,” Governor Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State disclosed after the Nigeria Police Council meeting held at the Presidential Villa on Tuesday.

SaharaReporters reported on Monday that there was a crisis in the Rivers Assembly amidst plans to impeach Fubara.

It also reported that the House on Monday removed its Majority Leader, Edison Ehie from his position.

The House members led by their Speaker, Martin Amaewhule, served an impeachment notice on Fubara before they fled for safety as tear gas was fired outside the Complex.

Addressing his supporters, who protested the development outside the Assembly Complex, the governor said he had not done anything to warrant an impeachment proceeding by the Assembly.

The development occurred hours after a fire broke out at the Assembly Complex on Sunday night.

He said, “We wake up this morning with a very troubling news. We have gone to the assembly to see for ourselves what has happened. On my way there I was shot directly by the OC Operation but it didn’t matter, somebody would die one way or the other.

“Either you die inside your house or you die on the road by something. But my journey today is whatever it is that want to happen, let it happen.

“If Siminalayi Fubara is impeached, I am not the first neither will I be the last. I am saying if it happens but what is important is any attempt that is not justified will be resisted. Let them come out and tell Rivers people that offence that I have committed.

“That is what I want, to come out and tell the people of Rivers state that the offence that Fubara committed that is warranting impeachment. But my happiness this morning is you the people of Rivers State represented by everyone you here are with us. I can go home and sleep.

“Let me assure you people that we will continue to defend you people. We will protect you people and you will enjoy the dividend of democracy. Let me thank you once again, at the appropriate time I will address the press.”
