In recognition of his outstanding career, a Valedictory Lecture will be delivered on Friday, October 4, in honor of Professor Gabriel Oladapo Adeyemi who will be retiring from the services of the Department of Geology, University of Ibadan upon reaching the mandatory retirement age of 70 years.
According to the organizers of the event which also include a book presentation by the retiring Professor will take place at the International Conference Center, University of Ibadan at 12pm.
The valedictory lecture will be delivered by Professor Ibrahim Adewuyi Oyediran, a Professor of Environmental and Engineering Geology from the department.
The lecture, entitled: “Engineering Geology and the Sustainability of Structures and the Environment: The Edunabon Manuscripts”, will celebrate Professor Adeyemi’s contributions to the field of Geology.
Oyediran, an expert in environmental and engineering geology, will highlight Professor Adeyemi’s work, which has had a significant impact on geotechnical engineering and geological investigations in Nigeria.
Adeyemi, Born in Edunabon, Osun State, Nigeria, in 1954, earned his B.Sc., M.Sc., and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Ife (now Obafemi Awolowo University), Ile-Ife, in 1980, 1986, and 1991, respectively.
He was a part-time lecturer at the College of Science and Technology, University of Lagos, Abeokuta Campus (now Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta), and later joined Ogun State University in 1987, where he rose to become Senior Lecturer in 1996 and Head of the Department of Earth Sciences between October 1997 and December 2000.
Professor Adeyemi joined the University of Ibadan in 2000, where he rose to the position of Reader and Professor in the Department of Geology in 2004 and 2007 respectively.
He also served as Acting Head of Department between 2004 and 2006 and Director of the General Studies Programme between 2012 and 2015.
Throughout his career, Professor Adeyemi successfully supervised 13 Ph.D. theses, with three more candidates nearing completion, and has mentored numerous students who have gone on to become full Professors.
Professor Adeyemi has made remarkable contributions to the fields of environmental, geotechnical, engineering geological, and hydrogeological investigations.
He is regarded as the “Father of Modern Engineering Geology in Nigeria” for his leadership in revitalizing the Nigerian Association for Engineering Geology and the Environment (NAEGE), which has since gained international recognition.
He is also a Fellow of several professional organizations, including the Nigerian Mining and Geosciences Society and the Nigerian Association of Hydrogeologists.
His dedication and scholarship has left an indelible mark, inspiring generations of geologists and shaping the future of engineering geology in Nigeria.
